Apples

Agia, Larissa, is the heart of apple cultivation in Greece, producing approximately 20% of the country’s apples. The area’s unique microclimate, the fertile slopes of Kissavos, and the long-standing experience of local producers have established Agia as the most dynamic apple-growing region in Greece.

The Tradition of
Apple Cultivation in Agia

Apple cultivation in Agia began around 1950 with the well-known “firikia,” the area’s first local variety. Soon after, Delicia and Renet apples followed, and from the 1980s, producers shifted to modern and high-yield varieties of the time, such as Imperial, Royal, Double Red, Wellspur, Red Chief, Starkimson, as well as Golden, Jona Golden, Smoothy, and Granny Smith.

Today, the main apple varieties cultivated by the KISSAVOS Cooperative are:

Red varieties: Starkrimson, Red Chief, Jesey Mac (summer)

Yellow varieties: Golden Delicious

Green varieties: Granny Smith, which is increasingly in demand

Annual production exceeds 3,500,000 kg (3,500 tons) across 12 different varieties, offering a rich range of colors, aromas, and flavors.

Sorting & Packaging
After harvest, the apples undergo a careful sorting process, where they are selected based on size, color, and fruit quality. They are then packaged in specialized crates or trays to ensure freshness and impeccable presentation until they reach the final consumer. Each stage is carried out with respect for the product and in accordance with quality standards that guarantee their natural taste and safety.

Cultivation & Management

Our apple trees are cultivated on over 700 acres of organized orchards, using linear Palmette systems, full irrigation, and overhead nets for protection against weather conditions. Harvesting is done manually, with careful selection of each fruit, and transport to the cooperative’s facilities is immediate to ensure maximum freshness.

At the cooperative’s sorting and packaging center, apples are graded according to size, color, and quality, securely packaged, and stored in Ultra Low Oxygen (ULO) controlled-atmosphere chambers, which preserve their characteristics for an extended period.
