Chestnuts

The renowned Kissavos chestnuts come from the lush slopes of the Kissavos mountain range, home to the historic community of Ampelakia. Its northern, southern, and eastern slopes are covered with oak, fir, and chestnut trees, creating an ideal microclimate for producing high-quality chestnuts.

The History of the Chestnut
in Kissavos

The chestnut is an ancient tree, as evidenced by findings dating back to the Bronze Age. In the region, the history of chestnut production and trade is closely linked to the town of Kasthanaia, located near the village of Sklithro. The area became an important center for the cultivation and commerce of chestnuts, with fruits exported throughout Greece and abroad.


	Cultivation & Harvesting Chestnut trees thrive at elevations above 250 meters, with each tree producing 30–50 kg of fruit. They bloom in spring, and the chestnuts mature from September to November. Chestnut groves extend throughout Kissavos and Mavrovouni, and production has shown a steady increase thanks to the renewal of orchards and modern cultivation management. Intensified production, organic control of chestnut blight and codling moth using pheromone traps, along with the experience and dedication of the farmers, have increased yields without compromising fruit quality.

Sorting & Packaging

After harvest, the chestnuts are sorted by size, shape, and quality to select the best fruits. They are then packaged in specialized boxes or bags, preserving their freshness and excellent appearance. This process ensures that every chestnut reaches the consumer with high quality and flavor, ready for consumption or processing.
